| Safe Haven cares for several hundred animals each year. Through 2006 our transient residents were species indigenous to northern Illinois; you may learn more about them on our pages devoted to foxes, opossums, squirrels, and woodchucks. Since moving to Nevada we have received assistance calls for species that we didn't encounter in Illinois, including the great horned owl (right).
When we receive calls from the public regarding baby animals, our volunteers assist callers in returning orphans to the nest or den in the hope that the mother will return for the baby. When all attempts fail, we then accept the orphan for placement. Advice is given for temporary care only until it arrives at Safe Haven. - It is not our policy to provide information regarding raising the animalthe caller must find placement with a licensed facility.
- It is illegal for any unlicensed person to keep wildlife.
- When we receive single orphaned animals, we contact other facilities that may have another like specie. Every effort is made to "pair up" single orphansthey should never be raised by themselves. It is critical that they learn from each other all necessary behaviors for survival.
